WinZip(R) Self-Extractor version 1.1 BETA 3 Copyright (C) 1995 by Nico Mak Computing, Inc. All Rights Reserved PRE-RELEASE VERSION - See readme.txt for installation instructions Overview: This version adds options to create self-extracting ZIP files with * Windows 95 long filename support * MS-DOS support (one EXE works on either MS-DOS or Windows) * Improved automation and customization for software installation, as described in the file custom.txt All versions can be created with English or German messages. Changes since beta 2: - Fixed problem in German language self-extracting ZIP files unzipping some large files. - When running a self-extracting ZIP file under MS-DOS the default "Unzip To" directory is ignored. Requirements: Standard English language self-extracting ZIP files without long filename support and MS-DOS support can be created under MS-DOS or Windows, as with WinZip Self-Extractor 1.0. Self-extracting ZIP files with the new features described above can only be created under Windows (3.1, 95, or NT). Windows 95 or a system with compatible long filename support is needed to unzip files with long filenames. The Intel version of Windows NT is currently NOT sufficiently compatible (for more info, see the section titled "Technical Details"). Options: The main WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box includes four new radio buttons: Windows 3.x - no long filename support This option creates self-extracting ZIP files without long filename support; these files are almost identical to those created by WinZip Self-Extractor 1.0. Any long filenames in a ZIP will be truncated when they are extracted. Windows 3.x or 95 - w/long filename support This option enables long filename support; however, if these self-extracting ZIP files are run on a system without this support a message box is displayed warning the user of potential problems, and any long filenames will be truncated. This message box is displayed AFTER the optional comment message box. Windows 95 required - w/long filename support This option creates self-extracting ZIP files that REQUIRE a system with Windows 95 compatible long filename support. If these self-extracting ZIP files are run on a system without this support the standard system message "This program requires a later version of Windows" is issued. Windows 3.x and MS-DOS - no long filename support This option creates self-extracting ZIP files that can be run under Windows version 3.1 or from the command prompt under MS-DOS. Thus, they are useful even to people that do not have Windows installed. There are also radio buttons specifying whether the English or German language self extracting header will be used. Command line switches: The command line switches -31 -31LN, -95, and -DOS correspond to the first four new radio buttons. -LE and -LG stand for "Language English" and "Language German". Hint: When running WinZip Self-Extractor from a BAT file or "make" file under Windows 95 you can wait for WinZip Self-Extractor with the command START /WAIT WINZIPSE.EXE -y [other options] filename.zip Technical Details: WinZip Self-Extractor creates 16-bit self-extracting ZIP files. Long name support is provided by the new interrupt 21 functions for long filenames. These functions are not available under the Intel version of Windows NT 3.51 (I have email saying that it works under the Alpha or MIPS versions but I have not confirmed this). Feedback: Comments are welcome. Please be sure to post them in the "WinZip Beta" section of the GO WINZIP area on CompuServe (S22) or send them by email to beta@winzip.com. Please do not post beta feedback in other forums or newsgroups, else they may never be seen by the developer.
